What Does that Look Like In An Intake?
Our comprehensive intake assessment by a resource coordinator, works with the head of household to:
-
Identify issues creating emotional/economic difficulties
-
Prioritize needs and short-term goals to eliminate barriers
-
Create Action Plan with client
-
Educate, advocate, and connect client with appropriate community resources
-
Explore motivation of client; form long-range goals to increase earning capacity
-
Budget exploration to work with clients to help self identify financial opportunities in their lives
With increased access to job placement services, clients are able to increase their employment eligibility and skills through:
-
Career exploration
-
Mock interviews, application preparation
-
Resume assistance
-
Contingency planning for child care and transportation (transportation budget/options, requirements of purchasing a car, and used car savvy)
Over the years, the one element that we’ve worked hard to establish is to be able to provide Legal Advocacy, such as:
-
identify nature of legal situation
-
Explore options and strategies available to remedy situation
-
Explore financial resources of client, form budget plan
-
Refer to appropriate legal counsel (family law, Legal Services, bankruptcy, etc.)
-
Or, direct toward application for pro se Relief from Domestic Violence
-
Apply for reinstatement of driver’s license through Iowa Court Approved Payment Plan (C.A.P.P.)

Mental Health Services:
Over the years our agency has worked with a variety of local providers to assist client’s with accessing mental health services to further support clients as they address life’s challenges. With the support of new funding opportunities, we’re now working to offer therapy and counseling services at Women Aware for the convenience of those we serve. This new program not only benefits our existing clientele, but also creates another point of access for mental health services within the community.

How Is Our
Work Funded:
Women Aware is a nonprofit organization, we were funded entirely through donations from individuals and organizations as we do not receive any state or federal funding to deliver services. For many years our resource coordinator was in part funded through grants from the United Way of Siouxland, combined with the fundraising efforts of the board of directors to operate the agency. Changes in United Way funding and grant restructuring have resulted in a loss of this crucial funding in the future; and our largest annual fundraiser is Women of Excellence which is held every March to mark National Women’s History month and honor the work of individuals within our tristate area. These items combined with several pop up fundraisers throughout the year, and various grants help sustain our operations.

Mission
“Women Aware empowers those facing challenges to gain access to services, transitioning them to a more hopeful and stable life.”

Do You Serve More Than Just Women:
YES, We serve all genders, we retain our name as an homage to those individuals that went before us and championed for our success so that we could still be in operation today.
